GAMES TO PLAY IN THE POOL

Tour de SAC Wrap Up

The Tour de SAC came to an end Sunday, July 26th We enjoyed a champagne celebration with long time instructor Whyle McConnell. This year we had 34 riders compete but only one rider crowned the winner. Congratulations Linny Simkin!! Linny started the tour with a goal of taking 40 classes in the 23 day event. Once she hit her goal, she figured there were only a few more so why not! With a total of 45 cycling classes Linny only missed one class. Yes, she came back to the club twice and sometimes three times to take classes. Her incentive was her son. He was training for an event and Linny thought if he can do it then so can she. Congratulations Linny on your accomplishment. We are excited that you finally got a day off!

New ZUMBA Class!
By Dana Hansen, Director of Fitness Operations

Dear Members,

I’ve been with the club for 8 years and have never seen such a postive response to a group exercise class than I have with ZUMBA! This is the first time I have seen people leaving classes sweaty and with a big grin on their face. It’s rewarding to see our members having so much fun! If you are like me, a bit hesitant and uncoordinated or nervous about standing out, leave those reservations at the door because last I checked we don’t have many professional dancers here. We are all in the same boat of trying to figure out how to shake our hips. So join our instructors in their ZUMBA classes; Kate on Mondays at 6:35 pm, and Trish on Fridays at 9:00 am. Trust me, classes get easier and more exciting!

Squash Shoot-Out On Target

A full field of sixteen played in the Double Elimination Tournament held on Friday, July 31st. "Par" scoring and the handicap system made for some interesting and entertaining matches, with Jan Diepenheim moving straight through to the Finals in the winners bracket. Along the way, he defeated both Gerri Cheah, and Glen Bradburn who ended up playing each other in the Finals of the Losers Bracket, with Glen squeaking out the victory in a real "nail biter". Are you confused yet? In the final Finals, Glen handed Jan his first loss forcing them to play yet another match to determine the ultimate winner. Glen prevailed, and everyone could relax and enjoy some good pizza and cold beer. It was lots of fun. Whew!

There are ways to earn bonus points with one being to exercise with a member! If you join an employee in doing something you have never done, they earn 10 bonus points. So don't be surprised if someone randomly asks you to step out of your comfort zone and join them! You never know, you might find something new you'd enjoy.

TRX Suspesion Training
By Paul Nelson, Personal Fitness Trainer

TRX is an incredible new training tool we've added to the club. It was invented by former navy seal Randy Hetrick. He and his seal teammates needed a way to stay in peak condition no matter where they were and suspension training was the answer.

TRX can give you an edge over conventional strength training because of the high degree of core strength, balance and flexibility that it involves. Anyone can learn to use TRX to rapidly and safely improve these three components and increase functional fitness, which is required in every sport and daily life.

Traditional resistance training using machines, and even free weights limits the planes of motion and core recruitment possible during an exercise. TRX is a single piece of equipment that can be attached anywhere, and is designed to engage the body as a single coordinated system. It has an incredible variation to the planes of motion and movement angle for virtually every exercise. By integrating these movements into a workout, muscle mass increases proportionately and in balance, which reduces the risk of injury. It is also said to be “all core, all the time” because it intentionally displaces your center of gravity forcing your core musculature to work hard whether you are doing a row, chest press, lunge, atomic push-up or bicep curl! Maintaining core engagement and postural alignment helps strengthen and control the stabilizing musculature with improved posture and alignment as a direct result!

So whether you are looking to dramatically improve your fitness, look and feel better, or increase performance, TRX workouts can help you get there quick! Contact Paul Nelson for a 30-minute introductory lesson.

Eat Breakfast to Help Lose Weight!

Did you know eating breakfast is great for weight loss? Starving yourself is not the answer even though it is a common strategy practiced by most. Eating breakfast helps reduce your hunger later in the day, making it easier to avoid overeating or turning to those quick fixes such as candy, pastries or chips. Prolonged fasting or skipping a meal can increase your body's insulin response, which in turn increases fat storage and weight gain. A healthy breakfast refuels your body and replenishes the glycogen stores that supply blood sugar (glucose).

Starting with breakfast will refuel your body with the nutrients it requires to stay focused and energized throughout the day.

For those beginning their day at the club our Café opens at 6:00 am and offers a variety of breakfast items such as hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, granola, muffins, bagels, fresh fruits and more to get your day started off right.

Gait Analysis

Gait analysis is most commonly used to help athletes run more efficiently and to identify posture-related or movement-related problems in people with injuries. Do you have a nagging knee pain or maybe low back pain? Of course there can be many reasons for this but getting your gait analyzed might be one method of getting you back on the path to feeling good. It may be that you are muscularly weak and just need a few tips on stengthening. You might also be wearing the wrong shoes. Find out with physical therapist Phil Armiger whether you are on track with the right stride.

Tuesday, September 29th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm or Wednesday, October 7th from 8:00 am – 11:00 am.

Please reserve a time at the sportsdesk in order to guarantee your appointment but drop ins are welcome.

Am I Too Old for Swimming Lessons?

The obvious answer is no! As we age, we tend to forget what the benefits of a “helpful eye” from a qualified teacher can be. Such as what muscles we have favored vs. which one’s we’ve neglected, changes in body type, and range of motion.

Over the last 10 years alone there have been major modifications in the evolution of the swimming stroke, as well as what is currently legal/ acceptable in competition. One look at 42-year-old Olympic medallist Dara Torres, and you can see how dry land drills, diet, training techniques, and improved stroke analysis can aid even the most seasoned vet.

Allow our WSI certified swimming instructor’s help you regain some of the past, improve for future competitions, or simply change your workout regimen with a non-impact high cardiovascular exercise routine.
